Urgent Genius Weekender 2 top 3

Apologies for the delay. Thank you so much for all your hard work on the Urgent Genius Weekender 2 a few weeks ago. We presented the results in Texas at South By Southwest Interactive a few weeks ago, and then I (Jon) was on holiday in my home country so I’ve just arrived back to the UK. So… to recap, on 2-4 March, contestants from all over the world created digital content related to trending news topics. The top 3 viewed entries truly reflect the Urgent Genius spirit, from newsjacking, riding the wave of popularity to responding to important social issues. Here is a rundown of our top 3 with a link to our top 20 entries.

1. DIP SHIT LONDON

The Weekender begun on the same day as the trailer for Despicable Me 2 was the talk of the Internet. Team Dipshit responded with this painstaking human recreation of it. The urgency of its posting saw it quickly rack up a huge amount of views in a short space of time. It even got mentions in a few newspapers after its release. Views after 7 days: 206K. Current views: 303K.

2. DAN BULL

Dan Bull released his song ‘Bye Bye BPI’ as a response to ongoing discussions involving Internet piracy. To garner moreattention, he approached his fans directly and asked then to take part in his own video by picturing themselves with a page of lyrics and a musical instrument. The song proved a huge viral hit, not only being retweeted by Stephen Fry (who was sampled in the song) but also being posted on The Pirate Bay homepage. An incredible achievement. Views after 7 days: 86K. Current views: 162K.

3. THE SUN THREE LITTLE PIGS

This newsjacked response to the hugely popular Guardian advert from iris London’s Joe Jacobs and Tom Prendergast featuring a modern interpretation of The Three Little Pigs story showed The Sun’s understanding of the same story. With the original still fresh in people’s minds, this was released a mere two days later. It caused some confusion, discussion and ultimately views. Hopefully, it could also help boost pop sensation Dane Bowers’ career. Current views: 9,900.

Berlusconi says Ciao

Back in February we ran the Urgent Genius Weekender. Teams from around the world competed with a simple mission to create genius content from Twitter trending topics in just 48 hours.  One of the hot topics was Big Berl and his Bunga Bunga sex parties. Fast forward eight months and Silv has final departed from office after riding through a number of scandals. General Comments about Urgent Genius

 

Great competition – it’s amazing what was pulled together in such a short space of time. It’s very interesting to be able to see what worked and what didn’t and try to draw to some useful lessons from that.

It’s nice to see Dan Bull leading the pack – we’ve collaborated with Dan several times already here at BBC Comedy Online so it’s reassuring to know we’re already talking to some of the right people! We’ve also worked with Jon Plackett before and we thought there was some very smart thinking behind the FaceProtest idea. Not comedy per se, but then that wasn’t the man goal of the weekend.

It was interesting to note that the Thom Yorke video inspired so many of the top 21. One of the challenges we face at the BBC is that mashups are very tricky from a rights perspective so an idea like Choreographer Speaks Out, which neatly sidesteps that problem is great. It was a simple, funny idea well-executed and is probably the best example of something we might have featured on our site.

All-in-all a great experience and a valuable experiment – thanks for inviting us to be part of it! There’s a lot of overlap with what we’re trying to achieve with our Spout topical comedy brand so we’ll definitely be keeping a close eye on all things Urgent Genius in the weeks and months to come.

 

MATT HOLT, BBC COMEDY: SPOUT, PRODUCER

A lot of broadcast comedy wants to drag you into its own world, with its own characters and its own catchphrases. What’s so exciting about an idea like urgent genius is that it asks you to make comedy about the world at large, or at least what the world at large is talking about on the web. It encourages completely different production techniques and gives you a direct line into audiences you wouldn’t normally get. Let’s do it again some time.

WILL SAUNDERS, BBC COMEDY, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER

Urgent Genius highlights the potential for how brands can become culture-friendly through positive contribution rather than interruption and also have a much closer, multifaceted and continual dialogue with people. This needs to be one piece of the puzzle of marketing communication of the 2010’s. Great competition.

By taking something in the news and maximizing your own brand idea/message through creatively mixing with it creates new opportunities for brands to become culture-friendly and keep an ongoing conversation with people.

Thom Yorke dancing to Beyonce to Bieber to Benny Hill; Utter genius!

Bieber seemed to emerge quite a bit. My particular favorite was “Bieber gets shot a lot.” Oh come on we’re all thinking about it.

 

STEPHEN RUTTERFORD, CREATIVE PARTNER, THE BROOKLYN BROTHERS WORLDWIDE

Great competition. Usually with this sort of stuff, speed can compensate for wit. It doesn’t have to be great, as long as you do it first. The longer you take to respond, the better it has to be. But with this competition it’s a fairer race, it’s quick turnaround, but the finish line is the same for everyone. Because of the tight times, people don’t get the chance to keep digging and finding something really original. If you also have to make and edit the thing, you only have a tiny amount of time to write the actual idea. That’s probably why a lot of them feel very familiar, or follow tried and tested formulas. For me, those that stood out, were the ones that did something with a little extra twist, or observation, to lift it above a joke you can see coming or feel like you would of told. Or, as in the case of the Thom Yorke DnM REm1x!!!, create something that works so well on its own, you can’t believe they managed to do it in the time available.

“If we relate this project back to brands, Dead Island and Radiohead certainly got additional PR for their brands this weekend because of Urgent Genius! The launch of Radiohead’s new album, and their music video for Lotus Flower acting as it’s weird commercial, and the shocking Dead Island trailer for their soon-to-be-released video game were already newsworthy and extreme commercials in their own right. Because both brands put controversial content out there, they were able to benefit from more “talkback” and consumer tribute videos to add to their own viral effect.”

“This project opens up the question: what are the most viral mediums? There were submissions that ranged in media from videos, photographs, websites, t-shirts, games, twitter feeds, facebook pages and infographics. It’s second nature to look at video view counts but we would have loved to know the metrics on all of these other mediums to discover if one lends itself to becoming viral more so than other mediums.”

“This was a great first attempt into discovering whether brands can hijack topical events… Radiohead and Dead Island proved that they can get more traction and buzz with mashup and copycat videos… but it’s still a big question mark on whether a brand or product can succeed riding a non-related buzz-worthy news story”

I like the idea of this Urgent Genius Event and was glad to be asked to be a part of judging UG 2011. There were some great entries using all different forms of media and channels and it was all turned around in only 48 hrs. I did hope to see more innovative use of the tools we have at our disposal to respond to this kind of brief but. I suspect this will come as creative folk get their heads around what’s expected from UG.

RADIOHEAD – IN GENERAL

Radiohead are good at this. Thom Yorke quite possibly set out to create the perfect parody of himself. A Marcel Marceau meme made in his garage, something everyone could take a crack at. The king of the flailing limbs has mashed up Napoleon Dynamite with a po-faced Charlie Chaplin and opened up the floodgates of tom-foolery.

THOM YORKE WHIPS HIS HAIR

Simple, eternally dumb but well crafted. If they hadn’t done it, someone else would’ve within an hour. But big points given for great editing. I could feel Thom getting his “swag on.” They managed to turn one of the great modern artists into a bratty pre-teen. Not incredibly original, but I would definitely share this. And other people already have. And that means it worked.

There are some beautifully timed dubs, like ‘Thom Whips His Hair’ which everyone is picking up on. A Willow Smith pop tune mashup which makes you realise in the five minutes of going ballistic there must be every form of modern ‘dance’ squeezed in.

We wanted to point out that it looked like “Radiohead + Whips Hair smashup” had the most views of any other video in the project, at over 45k this weekend, yet we didn’t enjoy the content anywhere near as much as it’s numbers would suggest. This leads us to ask if they were successful because of their own pure timing and luck, if by combining two big names they were able to reach a bigger audience, or if they just did a great job seeding. We think it’s a perfect example of why seeding is so important for brands who are trying to benefit from earned media. The content has got to be great, but it’s not going anywhere unless you put it out there through the right channels first.”

RADIOHEAD CHOREOGRAPHER

It does make you wonder who the hell the choreographer was and what was he thinking, which is why ‘Behind the Scenes with the Choreographer’ makes such a great watch.

It’s spot on, complete with stuttering interviewer and wonderfully obtuse answers. The interviewer prompts “a lot of people will be surprised to know that you don’t have a dance background” and our self-important choreographer retorts “What’s a ‘dance background’? Hmmph! Essentially, you know, a certificate that says you can express yourself.” No wonder thousands have been fooled into thinking it’s for real.

In fact, the actual choreographer of the original Radiohead video, Wayne McGregor, is artistic director at Sadlers Wells and was once a research fellow in experimental psychology at Cambridge. Not many people have a dance instructor like that sitting in their garage!

The fact this was pulled off so straight that its sits on the verge of plausibility is great. I first saw it posted on twitter as a genuine video. Made me giggle cereal onto my jeans leaving an awkward mark. Nicely done.

Radiohead Choreographer is the best I’ve seen, so far. This is really clever. My Favorite. Nicely written. Timely/topical. Good performance.

This is hilarious. Derivative, but cuttingly dry and witty throughout. The thought that Thom would have had a choreographer and that every flailing move was planned to the ‘T’ is a riot of an idea. Useful? Well, not everything has to be useful, now does it?

The back story is just as important as the piece itself when it comes to modern comms. And I love the way this treads the line of plausibility to keep the audience guessing. Tom Yorke being “raped from all angles” is a genius bit of dialogue written in a hurry. The TV title in the corner is a nice touch.

Behind the Scenes With the Choreographer (my joint-fave to win)

 

Is it original? Yes – as with the outtakes entry, it took what makes the original video so urgent and discussable and spun that round: what if what we think looks like crazy improv lunatic dancing is actually the result of expensive, pretentious professional choreography? what if someone, somewhere, thinks those insane moves are actually artistic, or in some way deep and meaningful?

If derivative, is it entertaining? Does it take the idea to a new place? As above, definitely a new spin on the ‘Thom Yorke is such a crazy dancer’ theme.

Do I get to participate? No

Would I share it? Yes, I have. Although again, it’s a little long. The shorter the engagement required, the more likely I am to share. Also, this could have been edited content-wise as well. The concept is awesome but there is a touch too much filler. I’d like to see the funny right away.

Is it useful? No

This is one of my favourite entries, and certainly my favourite Thom Yorke riff. It ticks the urgent box and gets high marks on genius. It’s a genuinely clever spin on the subject, and it is that spark of cleverness that compels me to share it. Also, this idea isn’t a mean laugh. Too often urgent riffs on the latest bit of pop culture detritus end up making fun of the person at the centre, and I think that’s cheap. I respect this entry for aiming higher. I also like that it pushes the funny-or-wrong bar: ”This is why Thom doesn’t like to put himself out there, because he feels like he’s being raped from all angles” is so over the top… it pushes the concept far enough to be shocking, but still keeps it funny. Also, massive props on the choice of t-shirt for the choreographer – very genius.

Loved that they had gone and shot this for real in public. That alone made me laugh – and the bit where he pokes his head out behind the chelsea tractor. Brave man, and nicely shot for something so simple. Thought it deserved more than the 2.5k views it had.

Lack of hits knocks a few points off though.

So to what I thought was the best……..”Lotus flower outtakes” – is it because it was filmed especially? Maybe. Is it because they created a good story? Maybe. It’s my Gold because it just entertained me. I forgot what I was watching/judging/commenting on. And with Urgent Genius to me that’s what it’s all about. Is it entertaining enough to be shared? To me this was. It’s the only one I forwarded to my non-industry friends – because if you love or hate Thom, if you think the dance is planned or not, this made the most of it and put a spin on it.

I liked that. Nice job.

Fantastically funny use of green screen. Despite the low fi production values it actually matched well enough that you could just go with it. Some great lines. Love the hat scene. “Can’t get it off!”. Great.

Possibly because I’m a sucker for a bit of “behind the scenes”, the high point for me is the hat indecision for Thom Yorke in “Lotus Flower Outtakes”.

Who hasn’t been through that agony of whether an accessory is too “summery” or “camp”? Forget all that energetic shimmying, I suspect the out of breath denouement is owing to this quandary alone.

The guy in this clip is a great match in wardrobe and physique. Personally I think it would have been funnier to shoot all the scenes disguising his face by shooting from behind or from tricky angles. With a bit more time this would have gone to the next level.

Tons of hits. It’s a simple ‘next step’ after the original video. You can also see where else Thom has been dancing by clicking the videos underneath this one. They used Google maps to place him in different locations – fun. Not much interaction but it’s definitely shareable.

There are a few clever bits – Thom having to pee – but it’s too long. Applause for taking the idea in a new direction, though: for me, this is a lot more genius than a Thom Yorke + drum and bass mashup.

I like the “Dancing Thom Yorke says Never to Justin Bieber” as an example of “crossing the memes”…though I prefer the lesser watched “Thom Yorke kills justin bieber” (http://tinyurl.com/4jnclqr). Both don’t just overlay a new track on old footage (“Thom gets down to Single Ladies), they use Yorke cuts/motions as reactions. But the small number of views tells me (a) they weren’t well spread, or (b) they were too long a walk for a drink of water.

Definitely does something new with the idea – while a lot of people are taking Thom’s silly dancing in one direction (setting him to different music) this takes a totally different angle: the tantrum over something we all want to kick and scream about.

Do I get to participate? No

Would I share it? Yes, already did.

Is it useful? No

I like the simplicity of this idea and the (relative) brevity of the execution. A two-minute clip asks a lot of the viewer; at under a minute this is much easier to engage with. The three act set-up works and the editing is slick. Very shareable.

I’m ok with that because unlike Dead Island’s unrecognizable (and virtual) cast, ‘Shaun of the Dead’ featured (and developed) empathetic characters who retain their power even in this remake. And better: this remix reminds one that a good yarn, inspired acting and real character development beat out the shriller notes melodramatically sung by the v-game trailer.

Full marks for urgency but this could have been a lot more genius if the game went anywhere. Remember Spymaster? The element of competition and the possibility of improving (say, going from Schmoozing Berlusconi to Lothario Silvio to Silvio Stud, and changing the levels visually – the office, the villa, the presidential limo? – or making my score tweetable) would have added something. The game engaged me for the moment I played it, but it lost me when I saw there was nowhere else to go. Still, for 48 hours that’s an impressive result.

I liked this entry a lot. It’s dead simple, which is a win: it’s easy to get, and it’s easy to engage with. The concept is also a bit wrong, but that makes it work.
